Working Hours:
Working hours for this position consist of a 7.5 hour period (between the hours of 7:30 am and 8:00 pm) Monday through Friday exclusive of a 1/2 or 1 hour lunch. These hours to be agreed upon between the supervisor and the employee at the onset of employment.
Note: In this position, the employee may be required to work one – two evenings per week. This position may require additional evening and/or weekend work with the employee having the option of working this time in addition to, or in lieu of regular hours.
Summary:
The Advising Center supports student success and retention through proactive advising, monitoring student progress and implementation of early intervention strategies.
Student Success Navigators play a vital role by serving as a resource and guide who helps students navigate college successfully. Student Success Navigators are members of a student coaching team who provide intentional interventions, advising and support to student to identify and develop their career and educational goals. Student Success Navigators proactively monitor student progress, conduct outreach and care calls to connect student to services, provide academic /career advisement and facilitate registration. Student Success Navigators will be responsible for achieving retention and enrollment goals for assigned populations and document outcomes.
Student Success Navigators will provide comprehensive advising and academic support to all students with a primary focus on assigned programs in meta-major areas. This individual will work closely with the Academic Divisions and is expected to have a solid understanding about all programs assigned, including curricular changes, career paths and transfer options.
The Student Success Navigator – Completion Specialist will provide support to special populations which require intervention to increase retention and completion. These support services will include developing educational plans and a path to completion on-going outreach and student follow-up, monitoring progress and reporting outcomes.
Student Success Navigator Duties and Responsibilities:
- Advise new/prospective and current students in navigating the various degree and certificate programs (credit and non-credit) and help interpret academic and institutional policies for students.
- Build a positive mentoring relationship with students and work with and instruct them to resolve issues that impede their academic success.
- Meet and communicate regularly in person, by phone or via teleconference with students to provide information, resources and support as they progress through college.
- Develop individual education plans for students including: identifying student's skills, strengths, interests; clarifying educational, career and life goals; and supporting students in the enrollment process.
- Monitor student progress toward goals and proactively advise and assist students to problem solve issues that may be barriers towards achieving academic goals, persistence, attendance, and completion.
- Review and stay current on curriculum requirements and policies impacting students, including meta-majors and guided pathways.
- Provide targeted outreach and hold meetings (including remote/online) with students flagged from the Early Alert program or are identified as at-risk for retention.
- Conduct regular outreach to facilitate registration.
- Establish an academic success plan for students which identifies needs and provides support. Plans include, but are not limited to: Goal setting, GPA recovery, study skills, test anxiety and stress management skills, time management, and connecting students to helpful resources.
- Partner with coaches, faculty advisors and other navigators and support staff to develop and deploy student support, communication strategies and opportunities to empower students to communicate their needs.
- Develop materials and conduct workshops, classroom presentations and coordinate events to increase student success, retention and persistence.
- Achieve established retention and enrollment goals for assigned populations while collaborating with the Cashier’s Office, Records and Financial Aid in order to mitigate student risk of being deregistered.
- Maintain advising logs and case management files to track contact hours, issues and outcomes with appropriate documentation and reporting.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
Completion Specialist Responsibilities:
- Advise, monitor, track and provide academic support to students in specific populations as assigned. This may include, but is not limited to students close to completion, developmental students or certain student demographics who need additional support.
- Develop and conduct workshops, classroom presentations and participate in events to support student academic and personal success.
- Monitor and track student retention and other success benchmarks as needed and assigned.
- Create reports and provide periodic outcomes.
- Serve on Division and/or College Committees required by the position.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience:
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in counseling, Education or Human Service-related field and a minimum of two (2) years’ experience working with students in an educational setting in an advising capacity.
- In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree listed above, a Master’s degree in another discipline may be considered with three (3) years of full-time experience working with students in an advising capacity.
- Must be proficient in the use of Microsoft Word & PowerPoint and especially Excel or the willingness to obtain appropriate training needed for the position.
Preferred
- Community College experience
- Bilingual Spanish/English
- Case management experience a plus

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, outside groups and the general public.
Mathematical Skills:
Ability to interpret basic statistical information.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
