Working Hours:

Working hours for this position consist of a 7.5 hour period exclusive of a ½ or 1 hour lunch over a 5 day work week. These hours will be agreed upon by the supervisor and the employee at the onset of employment.

Note: This position may require the employee to work one or two evenings per week depending upon the needs of the department. The employee may be required to work occasional Saturdays and the employee has the option to work these hours, in addition to or in lieu of regular hours.

Position Summary:

This position will direct and provide operational oversight for Tutoring Service areas as assigned.  This includes, but is not limited to: scheduling staff, providing training, evaluating tutoring activities and coordinating communications to promote services.  In addition, the Director will work collaboratively with the Academic Divisions and Academic Literacy and Language (ALL) Center to ensure that cohesive academic support is provided to all students, including remote and online learners.  This an on-campus position that will support both on campus and remote services.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee the day to day operations of tutoring as assigned and coordinate remote, online and on campus tutoring and academic support services.
  2. Provide academic coaching and tutoring to help students set realistic goals, develop academic plans and to improve study and classroom habits.
  3. Prepare informational materials and marketing strategies to promote tutoring services to students and faculty.
  4. Manage the hiring, training and scheduling of tutors and academic support personnel as required.
  5. Provide training and regular professional development for tutors.
  6. Implement procedures and processes to ensure quality support services for on-campus, online and remote learners.
  7. Provide workshops and develop /distribute materials to support student success.
  8. Manage and oversee the Academic/Learning Commons.
  9. In collaboration with Institutional Research, assess student’s academic progress and success and report results.
  10. At the direction of the Dean of Instruction collaborate with Enrollment Management, Academic Affairs, and Advising Services to support retention initiatives.
  11. Collaborate with divisional Associate Deans to promote tutoring effectiveness for various classes, especially barrier classes.
  12. Collaborate with Academic Literacy and Language (ALL) Center.
  13. Prepare and submit reports as required.
  14. Participate in staff meetings and college committees as assigned.
  15. Other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervise the tutors and the Math Lab Instructional Specialist and any other employees assigned to this position. Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with College policies, Collective Bargaining Agreements and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance, and taking corrective action with employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Experience:

Required:

  1. Master’s degree in Education, English or other relevant field.
  2. Experience teaching.
  3. Supervisory or management experience.
  4. Proficient in use of Microsoft Office, Learning Management Systems (such as Canvas), and teleconference technology.

Preferred:

  1. Two years of full-time experience tutoring.
  2. Two years of full-time experience teaching.
  3. Previous Tutoring/Learning Center management experience.   
  4. Experience working with students at a community college.
  5. Bilingual: English/ Spanish.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient with Microsoft Office, Office 365 and Outlook; Experience utilizing and navigating a Learning Management System (such as Canvas) is required. Experience with a SIS (Colleague) is strongly preferred. Must be comfortable learning and implementing new and existing technologies.

Other Skills and Abilities:

  • Patience and ability to problem solve are essential.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skill required.
  • Experience with college student population, non-traditional populations, and tutor program development.

Communication Skills:                                           

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Reasoning Ability:                                                   

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations.

Mathematical Skills:

Basic Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
