Working Hours:

THREE OPEN SHIFTS:

1. Mondays 3:30 PM - 9:00 PM

2. Wednesdays 2:30 PM - 9:00 PM

3. Thursdays 8:00 AM - 2:30 PM 

Labs coverage vary throughout the year. General Lab coverage hours are: 8:00 AM through 9:00 PM Monday through Thursday and 8:00 AM through 4:00 PM Friday. Lab hours subject to change throughout the year. 

Computer Lab Assistant Trainees are not guaranteed work hours and work as needed as a substitute or floater when needed for lab coverage or special projects for up to a maximum of 15 hours per week.

Lab Assistant trainee and Lab Manager will agree in advance on specific work hours for each semester, semester breaks, and holiday breaks. Hours may change based on the needs of the computer labs and available staff. The Computer Lab Assistant may work a maximum of 15 hours per week.

Summary:

The Lab Assistant Trainee will develop skills and experience to provide both technical and non-technical support for Faculty, Staff, and Students using the computer labs. The Lab Assistant Trainee will acquire skills enabling them to work independently to monitor all Weitz Hall building computer labs and ensure the labs are operating following policies and procedures set by the college.

The Lab Assistant Trainee will receive instructions related to the position from both the Lab Manager, the Head Lab Assistant, and other experienced Lab Assistants. Training will include but is not limited to, working with software and hardware used in the computer labs. During the training process, the Trainee will develop skills to analyze and resolve issues relating to Microsoft Windows and Office and other software installed in the computer labs. The Trainee will take part in the hardware troubleshooting and repair of computers and printers. The Lab Manager may direct Lab Assistants to perform tasks in other building computer labs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist faculty and users with login issues
  • Maintain full paper trays in all printers, Printing issues, clear paper jams
  • Assist faculty with smart cart systems
  • Assist faculty and users with all other hardware or software issues that may occur
  • Contact the helpdesk when lab devices need repair when the Lab Manager is not working. Problems caused by software and hardware issues. A detailed contact list is located in the Lab Assistant’s file cabinet top drawer
  • Assist the helpdesk department or Lab Manager with Weitz Hall tasks that do not interfere with regular duties
  • Submit a helpdesk ticket for IT related issues
  • Assist users with basic software usage. The Lab Assistant is not a Tutor and is not required to assist users with their homework
  • Report to the Lab Manager any issues in the Labs when the Lab Manager is working. If the problem occurs when the Lab Manager is not working, an email is sent to the Manager explaining the issue/s. If the issue is an emergency, notify the proper departments, such as the helpdesk at extension 5171
  • Notify Security (x6291) of any incident that needs immediate security attention when the Lab Manager is not working
  • Perform daily lab status surveys when required and complete all the necessary survey documentation
  • Patrol the first floor labs at least once every one-half hour for lab violations or to provide any needed assistance
  • Other related responsibilities as needed and assigned

Qualifications:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.            

HS diploma or GED required. One year of relevant experience working with computers, peripherals, and office equipment is required.

Associate’s Degree in Information Technology or related field or CompTIA A+ certification preferred. Bilingual speaking Spanish/English preferred.

Other Skills and Abilities:   

Must be self-motivated and be able to work with minimum supervision. Ready to self-train on new hardware and software. Must possess the ability to work independently to resolve user problems. A professional and courteous demeanor at all times. Exhibit tact and diplomacy when interacting with RACC staff, faculty, and students.

Computer Skills:

To perform this job successfully, an individual should be proficient in Microsoft Office (especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Internet skills. Knowledge and experience working with Microsoft Windows, networks, computers, and printers.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand, to sit and to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to walk and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

The Computer Lab Assistant Trainee will be monitored and evaluated throughout the training period. A Trainee who develops needed skills, demonstrates satisfactory performance, ability to interact with lab users professionally and courteously may be considered for a permanent fifteen-hour per week position if one becomes available.
