Working hours for this position consist of a 7.5 hour period during normal office hours exclusive of a 1/2 or 1 hour lunch; specific hours to be agreed upon between the supervisor and employee at the onset of employment. The employee will be required to work one evening per week. In addition, the employee may be required to work additional evening or weekend hours and the employee has the option to work these additional hours, in addition to or in lieu of regular hours. Specific work hours to be agreed upon by the supervisor and employee prior to the onset of employment.
The primary responsibility of this position would be to serve as a member of the Advantage program and develop intervention strategies for student retention and success. These strategies will include academic, career and transfer advising, and providing financial literacy and guidance. This person will interact with students in individual and group sessions. This position will also facilitate orientation sessions to familiarize students with career, transfer, and advising resources. This is a 12-month temporary position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Work cooperatively as a member of the SSSP/Advantage Program staff to provide comprehensive and culturally competent support services designed to promote academic success, career readiness, and degree completion.
- Assist the Director in identifying students eligible for the program. Facilitate new student orientation sessions and program events as needed. Assist in the development and delivery of a summer bridge program, new student orientation, open house or any other transition activity to the program and the college.
- Manage student referrals and conduct intake interviews with students. Provide intensive one to one and small group retention advisement and coaching. Assist students with setting goals and defining steps in academic and career planning from acceptance into the program through graduation. Provide targeted outreach to program students especially those that are at-risk and flagged by the Early Alert program, undecided students, and those on academic probation. Collaborate with other college departments to connect students to additional services that help students overcome social and economic barriers.
- Develop and operationalize student academic success plans for each student on the caseload. Document student success outcomes and administer program assessments. Maintain contact notes and case management files to track contact hours, issues, and student outcomes using appropriate documentation and other required grant reporting.
- Monitor student progress towards goals and identify potential barriers to success. Assist students in communicating with instructors or other college resources to facilitate attendance, course completion, consistent semester enrollment, and program completion.
- Provide individual and group sessions that focus on academic planning, career guidance, and financial literacy. Develop a financial literacy program that promotes an understanding of personal finance and budgets. Assist students in understanding the financial aid application process, their award package, student academic progress, loan burden and financial responsibilities. Develop financial literacy, college transfer, and career materials for student use. Utilize the Canvas module as appropriate.
- Assist students with identifying, planning for, and overcoming potential obstacles in the registration, financial aid, and use of technology. Assist students with maneuvering through college processes and procedures. Develop a working knowledge of community resources in order to refer students who need additional resources and services.
- Assist students in the college transfer process informing them of the next steps which include the college admissions application and the financial aid application making sure that they complete the associate degree first.
- Participate in ongoing training regarding curriculum requirements and college policies including but not limited to meta-majors and guided pathways.
- Utilize technology to provide support to students in an online learning environment including but not limited to Canvas, phone, mail, text, and other online tools.
- Attend staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Collaborate with other college departments as needed.
- Other related duties as required.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology or related field
- One year of experience working with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural and ethnic backgrounds
- Bilingual: English/Spanish
- Master’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, education, or related field
- One year of experience in academic advising or career guidance
- Experience working in a college setting
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, faculty, staff, outside groups and the general public.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
