Lock 50 - Cumru Township

Lock 50 - This is the starting point and inlet to the former Girard canal opposite of the big Reading Dam, No. 24. There are no buildings at this point. The canal runs through farmland and at one point crosses River Road where it is now filled in. The canal is of varying depths running from three to six feet. In the village of Seyfert it extends south of River Road for the entire distance of the village.

Remarks - It is our opinion that adjacent owners, particularly the farmers, may be interested in purchasing the abutting land. In talking with one of the adjacent owners, he indicated that he would be glad to have the first opportunity of purchasing the canal bed which is next to his property. We believe that this same thing could hold good with other owners. It is our opinion that this particular area, including lock 50 and extending to within about 500 feet of the aqueduct [sic] which crosses the Allegheny Creek, would have a total value of $1,800.00. However, it might be well to include this area with the next area which we will describe.
