Lock 33 - Shoemakersville

Lock No. 33 - This lock is located in Shoemakersville abutting along railroad property on the east and industry and private property on the west. There is no flow of water in the canal at this point and most of it has been filled in. There is a two-story stone house leased to J. Seering at $8.00 per month. It contains six rooms and has a wood shingle roof. There are no conveniences. It has an outside pump. Adjacent to the entrance to this lock is the main highway and Main Street of Shoemakersville. The Railroad Depot is in the northeast side of the lock and highway. There is a hosiery mill at the southeast point and they are using a portion of the land for auto parking for employees. We believe a buyer could be found readily for this entire area including the house, but we would recommend that the canal bed be included in this unit extending to Locks 31 and 32. For a great portion of this distance, the canal is filled with water and is used by swimmers and also for fishing and boating. We believe it would be possible to find buyers from the abutting property owners.

Remarks – We would recommend, however, that this entire area, including the canal from Lock 32 to and including Lock 33, be sold as one unit and it is our opinion that the fair market value for this property to be $4,000.00.
