Lock 30 - Hamburg City

Kernsville Dam - This was the starting point of our inspection. The only visible remaining feature of the canal at this point is the old stone lock which has been mostly filled in making easy access to land beyond. Immediately adjoining on the north there is an indentation filled with water that appears to have been the entrance to the canal. This appears to have been a loading entrance. There are no buildings at this point. The canal bed between this point and Lock 30 is dry and has a depth running from three to eight feet. This is mostly overgrown and is not used for any purpose other than that high tension [sic] electric lines border along the canal part of this distance. This area extending to but not including Lock 30 would have little or no use. It is our opinion that this entire area would not have a market value in excess of $500.00.

Lock 30 - This lock lays about seventy-five feet from the highway and has a small stream flowing through. There is a wooden bridge built across the lock to give access to the frame house beyond.

Dwelling House - (a) - The above referred to frame dwelling house is a two-story frame construction having five rooms and electricity. There are four small frame buildings used for chickens and storage. This dwelling is poorly located and would be inaccessible were it not for the foot bridge [sic] across the lock. Any other access to be made would be rather costly.

Dwelling House - (b) - This is a 1½ story stone with frame addition. It contains five rooms and electric. It fronts on the Pottsville Pike and the lot extends to Lock 30 in the rear. The house is rented to Perry Smith for $7.00 per month. This building appears to be more than one hundred years old and looks to have been a blacksmith shop.

Remarks - Considering the location of these two properties and the possible future cost in erection of a better access to Dwelling (a) and the fact that it lays between the lock and the river, it would be our opinion that these two houses, together with the lock and all of the canal bed extending to Hamburg to the point where Route 22 intersects, should be sold as one unit. In Hamburg we find that carious industries run their sewage line into the canal bed. It may be possible to sell land to adjacent property owners but it is our opinion that the price would be rather nominal. However, after considering the condition and nature of the canal and buildings in this particular described area, together with the possible future hazards [sic], it is our opinion that a fair market value for this entire unit would be $4,000.00.
