Federally funded grant program authorized by the Higher Education Act of 1965 (US Department of Education) through Reading Area Community College.
Goal is to provide intensive academic support for students to successfully graduate high school and enter post-secondary education.
Serves 50 students from Reading High School identified as low income, first in family to attend college, and experiencing academic issues that prevent classroom success.
- GPA of 1.5 or above is required for participation
- US citizenship or permanent resident
Participants enter program as rising 9th, current 9th and current 10th grade students and remain in program through first year of college.
Prepares high school students for success in postsecondary education through extensive academic year programs that include tutoring, enrichment instruction, counseling, mentoring, PSSA monitoring, college planning, SAT reviews, and financial aid counseling.
Cultural capital investment through college visitations, cultural field trips, and business tours.
Required six week summer component includes instruction in English (reading, writing, vocabulary), Math (algebra, geometry, calculus, trigonometry), Science (general, biology, chemistry), Business (economics, management), and a Foreign Language (Latin).
Unique partnership program with local businesses for career shadowing and paid internships enabling students to connect academic classroom theory with real world employment.
On-going relationship with parents, counselors and teachers to ensure student success. Similar to a wrap-around academic support program.
