Phi Theta Kappa, the honor society for two-year colleges, was founded in 1918. In addition to recognizing scholastic achievement, Phi Theta Kappa also provides members opportunities for scholarship, leadership, service, and fellowship.
The Reading Area Community College chapter was chartered in 1990. Currently enrolled students are invited to join when they have completed at least twelve hours of associate degree coursework at RACC with a grade point average of 3.6 or higher.
Students who feel that they qualify do not have to initiate the invitation process. Letters of invitation will be mailed to all eligible students, usually by the fifth week of each term, based on the previous term grades.
Membership benefits include scholarship opportunities, the option of wearing gold stoles and tassels for graduation, and Phi Theta Kappa recognition on diploma and transcripts.
The Phi Theta Kappa bulletin board is located in Berks Hall, in the center stairway lobby.
AMANDA'S GARDEN
You should have seen us Saturday at Amanda’s Garden. Boy, was I impressed! We dug right in (pun intended) and got to work. In 3 hours we accomplished a lot. The huge pile of mulch was spread and the pile of mushroom soil was half gone. Flowerbeds got weeded. The brick sidewalk, covered with years of grass and weeds, was uncovered and low spots filled in with dirt. Although we only got ½ of the sidewalk done, it was enough to inspire one of the workers (Joe) to say he was going to finish the job and he intended to recruit some neighborhood kids to help. I think Terry from the Berks County Conservancy was happy with the results and would welcome us back another Saturday. Remember that if 2 PTK members work on a project together, it “counts” on our timeline.
This was a great project for the chapter and for RACC. Thank you, Peggy Mull, for your leadership in this project. Thank you, Gary, for the great digital photos. Thank you all for your hard work. I hope no one is stiff today!
