Electric Utility Technology

Associate in Applied Science Degree

This program is offered in partnership with FirstEnergy Corporation. It prepares students for employment as a line worker in electric and related utility industries. Students gain knowledge and skills in DC/AC electricity, electrical circuits, electrical control wiring, wiring systems, transformers, power generation and power distribution. In addition to classroom and laboratory instruction students also participate in hands-on experiences at a local electric utility company training facility. Upon successful completion of the program, students will be more employable and able to command a higher starting wage rate than the typical entry-level employee in the utility industry. Enrollment in the program is restricted.

Degree Specifications:

To earn this degree, you need to take a total of 68 credit hours, completed consecutively over the 21-month period. Classroom-based courses will be held at Reading Area Community College, and laboratory "field" courses are held at the Met-Ed facility located near the college. The program will prepare you for employment as a line worker. Class size is limited.

Please note: The cost for this program will be paid by FirstEnergy, in which Met-Ed is a FirstEnergy company. This cost will include: tuition, fees, books, and a stipend for clothing & boots. In addition to the RACC admission requirements, an 80-hour mandatory technical skills observation session is required.
